Omeprazole, otherwise known under the branded name of Losec, belongs to a family of medicines called proton pump inhibitors. This type of medication helps to reduce the amount of acid that is produced in the stomach.
When stomach acid reaches the oesophagus, it can cause a lot of discomfort. This discomfort can be in the form of heartburn, bloating, pain when swallowing, or acid reflux.
Omeprazole is used to treat ulcers in the stomach, and gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults and children. In adults, Omeprazole can be used to treat a range of different ulcers, including ulcers in the upper intestine, bacteria infected ulcers, and ulcers that are caused by non-steroidal inflammatory drugs (NSAID’s) like aspirin, ibuprofen, and diclofenac.
Each person’s dosage for Omeprazole will be different as it depends on your condition and the severity of the problem. You should always follow the doctor’s instructions and read the patient information leaflet which comes with the medicine before taking medication.
Heartburn and acid reflux
If your gullet has been damaged and you are suffering from heartburn, you should take one capsule (20mg) a day for 4-8 weeks. If your gullet has not completely healed after this then your doctor could increase your dosage to two capsules (40mg) a day for a further 8 weeks.
If your gullet has not been damaged but you are suffering from heartburn or acid reflux, you should take half a capsule (10mg) a day.
Ulcers in upper intestine
If you have been suffering from ulcers in your upper intestine, the recommended dosage is 1 capsule (20mg) a day for 2 weeks. If after those 2 weeks your ulcer has not healed, your doctor may instruct you to take the same dosage again for another 2 weeks, and if it has not healed after that, they may increase the dosage to 2 capsules a day for 4 weeks.
Stomach ulcers
If you have been suffering from ulcers in your stomach, the recommended dosage is 1 capsule (20mg) a day for 4 weeks. If after those 2 weeks your ulcer has not healed, your doctor may instruct you to take the same dosage again for another 4 weeks, and if it has not healed after that, they may increase the dosage to 2 capsules a day for 8 weeks.
