How does Metronidazole work?

The treatment focusses on the bacterial cells responsible for the symptoms of bacterial vaginosis and prevents them from producing the chemicals these cells need to stabilise and multiply. Without an ability to spread, the existing cells are more vulnerable to antibodies which will then break them down, eventually killing them off for good.

How do I take Metronidazole?

Whoever prescribes your medicine will provide instructions to make it clear on how you take this medication. When used to treat bacterial infections in adults, the typical initial dosage is 800mg (two 400mg). After eight hours another 400mg dose is taken with this dosage repeated every eight hours. If a child is being treated for a bacterial infection, your doctor will work out how much of this medication they should be given based on their weight.

If you are an adult using this medicine to prevent infections after surgery, you should begin taking these tablets 24 hours prior to your operation. The typical dosage is 400mg every eight hours. If your child is due surgery, they should start taking this medication between 1 and 2 hours before the operation. Your GP will work out the right dosage based on their weight.

Avoid consuming alcohol while you’re taking Metronidazole and in the 48 hours after finishing the course.

What if I take too much Metronidazole?

If you take a larger dose than you were meant to, contact your doctor or nearest hospital emergency department straightaway. If possible, take the tablets as well as the box and leaflet for this medication with you.

What if I forget to take my medicine?

If you forget about a dose of this medicine, then take it as soon as you remember unless your next scheduled dose is almost due. Continue taking the following doses as normal but never take a double dose to make up for a forgotten one.

What are the side effects of Metronidazole?

As with all medicines, side effects can occur but they are a rarity. It’s always best to speak to your healthcare practitioner, doctor, nurse or pharmacist if you do experience side effects. You should stop taking this medication immediately and visit your doctor or go to a hospital if you experience any of the following while taking Metronidazole:

• Swelling in the lips or throat that may be causing difficulty with swallowing or breathing. Swelling of the hands, feet, ankles or face
• A skin rash with peeling, blistering, or bleeding of the skin around the mouth, lips, eyes, nose or genitals
• Urticaria (nettle rash) or an itchy, lumpy rash (hives)
• Jaundice (yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes)
• Pancreatitis (severe stomach pain which may reach through to your back)
• Unexpected infections with symptoms such as bleeding gums, mouth ulcers, bruising or extreme tiredness (potentially caused by a blood complication)

Can I take Metronidazole?

Before you begin taking this medication, you should speak to your pharmacist or GP if any of the following apply:

• You have pre-existing disease that affects the nervous system
• Kidney dialysis
• You currently have or have previously had a liver problem
• You are pregnant, think you may be pregnant or are breast-feeding

Speak to your doctor or pharmacist about any other medicines you are currently taking or have recently taken, as some may affect the effectiveness of Metronidazole or vice versa. You should highlight these medicines in particular:

• Anti-coagulants or blood thinning agents such as warfarin
• Lithium (for a mental illness)
• Epilepsy medicines such as phenobarbitone, primidone, phenytoin,
• Busulfan (for leukaemia)
• Ciclosporin (in order to prevent organ rejection)
• 5 fluorouracil (for cancer)
• Disulfiram (for alcoholism)
