When used to treat bacterial infections in adults, the typical initial dosage is 800mg (two 400mg). After eight hours another 400mg dose is taken with this dosage repeated every eight hours. If a child is being treated for a bacterial infection, your doctor will work out how much of this medication they should be given based on their weight.
If you are an adult using this medicine to prevent infections after surgery, you should begin taking these tablets 24 hours prior to your operation. The typical dosage is 400mg every eight hours. If your child is due surgery, they should start taking this medication between 1 and 2 hours before the operation. Your GP will work out the right dosage based on their weight.
Avoid consuming alcohol while you’re taking Metronidazole and in the 48 hours after finishing the course.
