Dosage:

Standard capsules contain a 150mg dosage of Fluconazole, with only a single capsule enough to clear thrush within a week. If it doesn’t then you should contact your GP. You should also contact your GP if you take any more than the recommended or standard dose or if your symptoms get worse or have not gone after a week.

If symptoms initially clear up but then return after 7 days, you can then take another capsule, provided of course you didn’t have an allergic or negative reaction the first time. If you have more than two separate incidents of thrush within six months then you should contact your GP.

Side effects of Fluconazole:

All medications affect individuals differently, so while most users see no side effects, if you do experience one or more of these side effects then tell your GP or pharmacist straight away.

Some patients may experience the following:

• Feeling sick or actually being sick, abdominal pain, heartburn, diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, dry mouth, taste disturbances, loss of appetite
• Difficulty getting to sleep or difficulty sleeping
• Headaches, dizziness or feeling unsteady on your feet, pins and needles, muscle pain, weakness or lack of strength, general feeling of being unwell, tiredness or, shaking
• Raised, red, itchy skin rash or a rash with pus eruptions
• Increased sweating, hair loss (rare)
• Low levels of potassium, increased cholesterol or blood fat levels (rare)

Precautions when taking Fluconazole:

Fluconazole is suitable for both men and women aged between 16 and 60, who are neither pregnant nor breastfeeding. It is not suitable for the following:

• If you are allergic to any of the ingredients or any other anti-fungal medication
• If you suffer from Tinea Capitis, a fungal infection of the scalp
• Intolerance to some sugars, Fluconazole contains lactose
• Fluconazole is not suitable for patients taking any of the following:
• Terfenadine or astemizole (for allergy)
• Pimozide (for mental health conditions)
• Cisapride (for stomach problems)
• Quinidine (for heart rhythm problems)
• Erythromycin (for bacterial infections)
• Halofantrine (for treatment of malaria)
• Amiodarone (for rhythm disorders)

If you feel that you need treatment for thrush but any of the things below apply to you, then talk to your pharmacist or GP before taking Fluconazole.

• If you are a man and your partner does not have thrush but you have pain on passing urine, you have ulcers, sores, or blisters on your penis or you have an abnormal smell or discharge
• Thrush more than twice in the last 6 months
• If you are a woman and you have lower stomach pain or pain passing urine, you have blood-stained discharge or abnormal bleeding or you have ulcers or sores on your vagina.
• Under 16 or, older than 60
• If you or your partner have a sexually transmitted infection
• Liver disease, or have had unexplained yellowing of the skin and eyes (jaundice)
• Kidney problems
• Heart problems, or low levels of magnesium, potassium, or calcium in your blood
• If you have AIDS
• Receive regular treatment from your doctor or if you have any other long-term illness
• If you are not certain about the cause of your symptoms
• If you are taking any other medicines
